I don't know about y'all, but I have a hankering to write a "Bullitt" meets "Starsky & Hutch" fic.

This may be because I watched "Bullitt" for the first time about two weeks before seeing my first episode of S&H. Or it may be because Bullitt takes place in San Francisco, and it wouldn't be too crazy to assume that at some point, the boys may have been loaned out to help with a case there. And it may also be because I see Hutch as sort of a loose amalgamation of Frank Bullitt (a friendlier, happier Frank Bullitt, that is). It can't be a coinky-dink that Steve McQueen and David Soul have a somewhat similar look about them, albeit different physicalities. Bullitt came out in 1968 and S&H in 1975, so I don't think it's too much of a leap to assume there was influence, there.

(Oh, and let's not forget that Lalo Schifrin did the stunning soundtrack for "Bullitt" and did the season one S&H theme that never ever got used again that I'm still just a little bitter about.)

I'm just picturing the boys, maybe circa 1971ish, as new detectives, being sent down to San Francisco to help out tough Lieutenant Detective Bullitt with somekind of crazy sting or something. And Hutch like, admires this guy, knows all about his cases. And Starsky's all "yeah, uh huh, alright buddy". And then they meet him, and Bullitt is his usual reserved, mildly abrasive self. And Hutch is fanboying, but Starsky is alllllll aboooout that MUSTAAAANG. A 1968 Ford Mustang GT 390 in dark green and Starsky is like, "yup, sign me up for a one way ticket to fuck-yeah town!"

And so Bullitt sort of suffers through this, but actually winds up thinking they're okay guys, even if they're still finding their feet as partners. AND THEN CAR CHASES HAPPEN.

PICTURE IT. THE TORINO, AND THE MUSTANG. CHASING DOWN PERPS ON THOSE INCREDIBLY STEEP SAN FRAN HILLS.

I mean, c'mon:

Yup. It's awesome. I'm gonna write it, if only to satisfy my weird fascination.
